Hand-Etched Czech Glass Nail File
$14
The File
A tempered borosilicate glass nail file, hand-etched in Bohemia. The micro-abrasive surface files with a finer, more directional action than emery, sealing the keratin edge as it shapes, so the nail never peels or frays. Gift-boxed in sage linen board with a home-compostable cotton ribbon.
Recommended for
All nail types · brittle, thin, or peeling nails · gel, dip, and natural manicures
Crafted from
Czech tempered borosilicate glass · hand-etched micro-abrasive surface · sage linen-board presentation box

Emery and metal files tear the nail in both directions: the ragged keratin is what causes the peeling, snagging, and splits you already know too well. A micro-etched glass surface works with the grain instead.
01
Hold the file at a shallow angle. Long, single strokes along the edge, never a back-and-forth see-saw.
02
Lightly pass the nail tip flat across the etched surface. This closes the keratin layer and prevents peeling.
03
Finish with a drop of Botanic Cuticle Serum, massaged in circles into each nail bed until warm.
Every millimetre of the file does something: the grip is weighted, the tip is tapered, the etched face and the smooth back each have a job.
Etched face · the working surface
A chemically-etched micro-abrasive that shapes and seals in a single pass.
Tapered tip · for sidewalls & corners
A narrowed leading edge reaches into the lateral fold without catching cuticle.
Smooth back · for sealing only
The reverse is un-etched: lightly press the nail tip flat to close the keratin layer.
Weighted grip · hand-polished
Balanced at the midpoint so the file does the work, no sawing pressure required.
Our files are made in a small workshop in the Czech Republic, a region that has been turning borosilicate glass into tools since the 16th century. Each piece is hand-inspected for the precise micro-etch that makes the surface work.
Borosilicate glass, tempered twice
Shatter-resistant to a 1.5m drop. The second temper is what gives the file its decades-long life.
Hand-etched abrasive
The micro-pattern is chemically etched, then inspected under loupe. No coating to wear off.

Emery boards replaced
Emery boards are single-use hygiene items: a salon throws them in the bin after each client. One Crystal File, cleaned under warm water between uses, replaces the entire landfill.

For the gel-wearer
Brittle under the polish.
Years of gel leave natural nails thin and peeling underneath. Weekly sealing with the etched surface re-thickens the keratin edge.
For the musician
A quieter precision.
Guitarists, cellists, pianists, where nail shape is technique. One-directional filing means no back-and-forth sawing near the string.
For the traveller
Slim in the carry-on.
Hotel emery boards are a gamble. The file slips into the suede pouch, the pouch slips into the toiletry kit.
For the pregnant, surgical, sensitive
Clinically clean.
Dishwasher- and alcohol-sterilizable, because the natural-nail ritual should be the one thing you don't have to worry about.

I was skeptical a file could feel like a ritual. The case alone is beautiful, and the etching is unreal.

After switching from emery boards my nails stopped breaking. The crystal etching seals the keratin. It works.

Short answer: yes, and not for vague "luxury" reasons. The chemistry matters. Emery tears keratin fibres in both directions, which is why nails filed that way peel within a week. A micro-etched glass surface files only the outermost edge and seals the layer as it goes.
Our files are tempered twice: they will survive a 1.5-metre drop onto hardwood or tile. If yours ever chips, cracks, or breaks under normal use, we replace it for life. Send us a photo.
Once a week is plenty for most nail types. Brittle or peeling nails may want a second light session mid-week. Over-filing is possible with any file. When in doubt, do less.
Yes, on the natural nail edge underneath. Don't use it on top of a cured gel surface; the micro-etch isn't designed for that.

Glass is infinitely recyclable. The box is recycled linen board with a home-compostable cotton ribbon. One Crystal File replaces roughly 50 emery boards over its lifetime: landfill math we can live with.
